⇒ to identify o.s. with another, understand his problems, situation, motives etc and relate to him with full attention and empathy:

- войди(те) в Х-ово положение{{}}≈ put yourself in X's place (position, shoes);

- put yourself in the position (place) of X;

- try to see X's side of it;

- try to understand X's position;

- look at it from X's perspective (point of view, position).

Oblomov had thought that a superior was so eager to put himself in the place of his subordinate that he would inquire carefully how he had slept, why he was bleary-eyed, ard whether he had a headache (1a).
